What is Lane?

Lane is a robust project management tool specifically designed for software development teams to track tasks, manage complex workflows, and facilitate collaboration. By utilizing this skill within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, developers can programmatically interact with Lane data. The integration is powered by Membrane, which simplifies the developer experience by abstracting authentication, handling token refreshes automatically, and providing a standardized interface for project data.

Lane Use Cases

  • Automating the creation and assignment of tasks within development lanes based on code reviews.
  • Summarizing team conversations and messages to provide project status updates via Openclaw Skills.
  • Synchronizing contact and user information across different productivity tools.
  • Triggering custom workflow automations when specific milestones are reached in the project lifecycle.

How Lane Works

  1. The AI agent initializes a session using the Membrane CLI, specifying the agent type for optimized tooling.
  2. A connection is established to the Lane platform by providing the application URL, which Membrane normalizes to a domain.
  3. The agent monitors the connection state, handling any required user actions like OAuth authentication in the browser.
  4. Once the connection is READY, the agent uses natural language intent to search for specific Lane actions (e.g., list messages, create contacts).
  5. Actions are executed with JSON parameters, or the agent can use proxy requests to hit Lane API endpoints directly with managed headers.

Lane Setup

To deploy this skill for Openclaw Skills, start by installing the CLI and logging in:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest
membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Next, ensure a connection to the Lane environment:

membrane connection ensure "https://joinlane.com/" --json

If the connection state is BUILDING, poll for readiness:

membrane connection get <id> --wait --json

Lane Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Lane skill manages several core entities to structure project data. The following table describes the primary data objects:

Entity Description
Lane The primary container for project tasks and workflow stages.
Contact Profiles for individuals or entities involved in projects.
Conversation A collection of messages grouped by topic or task context.
Message Individual communication units within a conversation.
User Internal team members with specific roles and access levels.

Lane Advanced Features

  • Natural language action discovery to find the right API operations without manual documentation lookups.
  • Transparent credential management that handles OAuth flows and token refreshes server-side.
  • Direct API proxying with the membrane request command for accessing advanced Lane features.
  • Support for headless environments through manual authorization code completion.
  • Machine-readable JSON output for all operations, facilitating complex multi-agent workflows within Openclaw Skills.
