What is Modulr?

Modulr is a leading platform providing embedded payments accounts, designed to help businesses automate complex payment flows and build innovative financial products. This skill enables AI agents to interact directly with the Modulr API through a secure, managed layer. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, developers can provide their agents with the ability to handle sensitive financial data and operations without manually managing authentication tokens or complex API headers.

Built on the Membrane framework, this skill handles the heavy lifting of OAuth and credential refreshing server-side. It allows for high-level interaction with accounts, payments, and reporting, ensuring that your agent can focus on executing business logic rather than navigating infrastructure. Whether you are building an automated bookkeeping agent or a payment orchestration bot, this integration provides the robust foundation required for fintech applications.

Modulr Use Cases

  • Automating outbound payment flows and transaction reconciliation.
  • Retrieving real-time account balances and transaction history for financial analysis.
  • Managing merchant records and generating automated invoices.
  • Monitoring payment notifications to trigger downstream business workflows.
  • Generating comprehensive financial reports for auditing and compliance.

How Modulr Works

  1. The agent initializes the environment by installing the Membrane CLI and authenticating the session.
  2. A secure connection is established to the Modulr platform, which manages the full lifecycle of API credentials.
  3. The agent searches for specific actions based on natural language intent (e.g., "list accounts" or "create payment") using Openclaw Skills.
  4. Commands are executed via the CLI, with parameters passed as JSON to perform specific financial tasks.
  5. If a specific endpoint is not covered by a pre-defined action, the agent uses the proxy request feature to communicate directly with the Modulr API while maintaining secure auth headers.

Modulr Setup

Install the CLI

Begin by installing the necessary CLI to manage your Openclaw Skills:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authentication

Authenticate your agent to the Membrane tenant:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Connect to Modulr

Create a connection to your Modulr environment:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.modulrfinance.com/" --json

Follow the provided URL to complete authentication in the browser. Once the state is READY, your agent can begin executing financial actions.

Modulr Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Modulr skill structures financial data into several key entities to ensure consistency across Openclaw Skills workflows:

Entity Data Description
Account Details regarding payment accounts and current balances.
Transaction Individual ledger entries, including status and timestamps.
Payment Payment instructions, beneficiary details, and execution logs.
Merchant Information related to merchant profiles and settings.
Invoice Records of merchant invoices and billing cycles.
Report Aggregated data files for reconciliation and business intelligence.

Modulr Advanced Features

  • Natural language action discovery to find the most efficient tool for specific financial intents.
  • Built-in API proxy for accessing the full breadth of the Modulr API with automated authentication injection.
  • Transparent credential refreshing to ensure long-running automations never fail due to expired tokens.
  • Machine-readable JSON output for every command, perfect for complex multi-agent pipelines.
  • Polling-based connection management to handle interactive client actions and configuration errors gracefully.
