What is memelink?

memelink is a specialized command-line utility designed for developers and power users who want to create memes without leaving their shell environment. As a key component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it provides a seamless interface for interacting with the Memegen.link API, allowing for instant generation of image macros, template discovery, and custom background processing.

This tool is particularly valuable for users who value speed and automation. By incorporating memelink into your Openclaw Skills toolkit, you can programmatically generate visual content, browse thousands of templates with an interactive fuzzy picker, and instantly share memes via clipboard or browser integration.

memelink Use Cases

  • Creating quick memes for team communication and pull request comments.
  • Automating visual content generation for developer advocacy and social media bots.
  • Browsing and filtering meme templates directly from the terminal using fuzzy search.
  • Generating custom image macros with specific fonts, colors, and external background images.

How memelink Works

  1. The user inputs a text string or a specific template ID with accompanying top and bottom text.
  2. memelink processes the command and flags to define image attributes like format, font, and dimensions.
  3. The tool sends a request to the Memegen.link API to generate the specific meme URL or image file.
  4. The output is delivered based on user preference, including terminal previews, clipboard copies, or local downloads.

memelink Setup

To add this functionality to your Openclaw Skills setup, install the CLI via Homebrew:

brew install dedene/tap/memelink-cli

Alternatively, you can install it using Go:

go install github.com/dedene/memelink-cli/cmd/memelink@latest

To increase your rate limits, you can optionally set the environment variable:

export MEMEGEN_API_KEY=your_api_key_here

memelink Data Schema & Taxonomy

The tool manages its internal state and settings using a structured configuration file:

Item Description
Config Path ~/.config/memelink/config.json
Supported Formats png, jpg, gif, webp
Command Aliases gen (generate), ls (templates)
Output Options JSON, interactive TTY, or raw URL

You can manage these settings using the 'memelink config' command to ensure a consistent experience across your Openclaw Skills workflows.
