What is Outbound Call?

This skill empowers AI agents to bridge the gap between digital processing and real-world telecommunications. By leveraging the ElevenLabs conversational voice API and Twilio infrastructure, the outbound-call skill allows your agent to place calls with natural-sounding voices and dynamic context.

It serves as a powerful addition to the library of Openclaw Skills, ensuring your AI can proactively reach out to users or customers to deliver information or gather responses in real-time. The voice agent on the call uses the same intelligence as your inbound workflows, providing a consistent and high-quality user experience across all voice channels.

Outbound Call Use Cases

  • Automating appointment reminders and confirmation calls to reduce no-shows.
  • Conducting follow-up calls for customer support or billing inquiries with specific context.
  • Notifying stakeholders of critical system alerts or urgent updates through a direct phone line.
  • Gathering feedback or conducting short surveys via natural voice interaction.
  • Dialing contact numbers to verify identity or provide multi-factor authentication details.

How Outbound Call Works

  1. The user provides a destination phone number and optional context or a specific opening message to the agent.
  2. The script validates and reformats the phone number into the required E.164 global standard.
  3. A request is sent to the ElevenLabs API using the pre-configured agent and phone number IDs.
  4. The ElevenLabs voice agent initiates the call through Twilio, utilizing the agent brain for the dialogue.
  5. Upon completion or failure, the skill returns a conversation ID or detailed error log back to the Openclaw Skills environment for tracking.

Outbound Call Setup

To use this skill within your Openclaw Skills collection, you must first configure your environment variables with your ElevenLabs credentials:

export ELEVENLABS_API_KEY="your_api_key"
export ELEVENLABS_AGENT_ID="your_agent_id"
export ELEVENLABS_PHONE_NUMBER_ID="your_phone_number_id"

You can then trigger a call from the CLI or within your agent workflow:

python3 skills/outbound-call/call.py +15551234567 "Hello, this is a call from your AI assistant."

Outbound Call Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill processes and returns data using the following structure:

Attribute Description Format
phone_number The recipient's destination number E.164 (e.g., +15551234567)
first_message The custom greeting spoken upon pickup String
call_context Background information for the AI agent String
conversation_id Unique ID for tracking the call session String (UUID)
status Success or failure result of the call attempt String

Outbound Call Advanced Features

  • Dynamic Context Injection: Pass specific metadata like billing IDs or user history directly into the call script for personalized interactions.
  • Automated Number Formatting: Automatically converts user-provided strings like (555) 123-4567 into the required E.164 format.
  • Error Reporting: Provides granular feedback and troubleshooting steps if a call fails to connect.
  • Consent Protocols: Built-in rules requiring explicit user confirmation before any call is initiated through Openclaw Skills.
