What is Knowledge Capture?

Knowledge Capture is a sophisticated Openclaw Skills integration designed to bridge the gap between passive conversation and active retention. By monitoring specific trigger phrases, the skill extracts key insights from your dialogue, categorizes them into a specialized knowledge base, and generates structured Markdown notes complete with core takeaways, analogies, and self-test questions.

Beyond simple note-taking, it features a built-in adaptive review engine. It automatically populates a question bank and manages a mastery status tracking system based on the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve. This ensures that you don't just record information, but actually internalize it through strategically timed quizzes and dynamic difficulty scaling based on your performance.

Knowledge Capture Use Cases

  • Capturing complex technical concepts or financial insights during an AI research session.
  • Automatically generating a structured study guide and flashcards from a brainstorming session.
  • Tracking long-term mastery of new programming languages or system architectures.
  • Implementing a self-improving personal knowledge base that prompts you for review at optimal intervals.

How Knowledge Capture Works

  1. Triggering: The skill activates when it detects keywords like remember this or add to knowledge base.
  2. Analysis & Synthesis: It extracts core concepts from the conversation, determines the appropriate category (Finance, Tech, Product, etc.), and generates a structured quick-note card.
  3. Database Integration: The note is saved as a Markdown file, and the skill updates the question-bank.json and mastery-status.json files.
  4. Review Scheduling: An automated review plan is created in the forgetting curve document, scheduling touchpoints at 1, 2, 4, 7, 15, and 30-day intervals.
  5. Adaptive Assessment: When you answer review questions, the skill grades your response (1-5 scale) and dynamically adjusts the next review date and question difficulty based on your score.

Knowledge Capture Setup

To enable Knowledge Capture within your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure your workspace directory is properly initialized:

# Create the required directory structure
mkdir -p /root/.openclaw/workspace/knowledge/{finance,agent,tech,product,misc,learning}

# Initialize the tracking files
touch /root/.openclaw/workspace/knowledge/learning/mastery-status.json
touch /root/.openclaw/workspace/knowledge/learning/question-bank.json

Knowledge Capture Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill maintains a highly structured taxonomy to ensure data portability and clarity:

File/Directory Purpose
/knowledge/{category}/ Stores Markdown notes organized by domain (e.g., tech, finance).
mastery-status.json Tracks learning dates, review counts, average scores, and mastery levels.
question-bank.json A JSON repository of generated questions (levels 1-4) for each concept.
01-forgetting-curve.md A human-readable schedule for upcoming review sessions.

Knowledge Capture Advanced Features

  • Multi-Level Questioning: Automatically generates four tiers of questions ranging from simple recognition to Feynman-technique teaching prompts.
  • Dynamic Scheduling: Moves concepts between new, learning, reviewing, and mastered statuses based on algorithmic scoring.
  • Weak Point Identification: Automatically tags concepts with low scores to increase their frequency in future review sessions.
  • Analogy Engine: Specifically prompts for and stores real-world analogies to improve conceptual anchoring.
