What is Surfline Public Forecast?

This skill provides a streamlined interface for accessing Surfline data through public endpoints. It allows users and agents to search for specific surf spot IDs, retrieve detailed forecast reports in text or JSON format, and maintain a list of favorite spots for quick summaries. As part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it enables AI agents to provide real-time surf insights without requiring user authentication, cookies, or complex session management.

By leveraging the scripts provided, developers can integrate high-quality swell, wind, and tide data into their workflows. The skill is designed to be gentle on endpoints with built-in caching and utilizes stable spot IDs for consistent reporting across different sessions.

Surfline Public Forecast Use Cases

  • Checking real-time surf conditions and swell heights before heading to the beach.
  • Automating daily surf reports for a curated list of favorite local breaks.
  • Searching for Surfline spot IDs to integrate into weather dashboards or outdoor planning apps.
  • Retrieving structured JSON surf data for programmatic analysis or multi-agent notifications.

How Surfline Public Forecast Works

  1. The user identifies a specific surf spot by searching for its name to retrieve the unique Surfline spot ID.
  2. The skill queries Surfline's public API endpoints using the identified spot ID to fetch current conditions.
  3. Forecast data is parsed and presented in either human-readable text for quick review or JSON for technical processing.
  4. For bulk updates, the skill reads from a local favorites configuration file to generate a summary for multiple spots simultaneously.

Surfline Public Forecast Setup

Find a spot ID

Use the search script to find the ID for your local break:

python3 scripts/surfline_search.py "Cardiff Reef"

Get a report

Fetch the latest conditions for a specific spot ID:

python3 scripts/surfline_report.py <spotId> --text

Configure favorites

To track multiple spots, create a configuration file at ~/.config/surfline/favorites.json based on the provided example, then run:

python3 scripts/surfline_favorites.py
