What is Task Status?

The Task Status skill is a vital component for developers building complex workflows within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem. It provides the necessary tooling for AI agents to send short, descriptive status messages back to the user chat, ensuring transparency during multi-step operations. By supporting both manual milestones and automated periodic heartbeats, it prevents the user from feeling disconnected during long periods of background processing.

This skill is particularly effective for tasks exceeding 30 seconds, where regular feedback is required to confirm that the agent is still active and progressing through its logic. Whether you are performing data migrations, video processing, or complex API synchronizations, Task Status ensures every state—from progress to final success or failure—is clearly communicated.

Task Status Use Cases

  • Providing heartbeat updates every 5 seconds for long-running data processing tasks.
  • Notifying users of discrete milestones in a multi-stage deployment pipeline.
  • Surfacing specific error messages or warnings when background processes encounter non-fatal issues.
  • Tracking the progress of file uploads or downloads with specific status descriptions.

How Task Status Works

  1. The AI agent initiates a task and calls the monitor_task.py script to start a background heartbeat.
  2. The monitor script automatically sends a "Still working..." status update every 5 seconds to the chat interface.
  3. As the agent hits specific milestones, it uses send_status.py to provide detailed manual progress updates.
  4. If a task fails, the agent sends an error status containing specific diagnostic information.
  5. Upon completion, the agent calls the stop command on the monitor to send a final success message and terminate the background process.

Task Status Setup

To integrate this into your workflow, copy the task-status folder into your local installation directory:

# Standard installation path
C:\Users\Luffy\AppData\Roaming\npm\node_modules\clawdbot\skills\task-status

Once copied, ensure your AGENTS.md or TOOLS.md references the skill directory to make the Python scripts available for execution.

Task Status Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes status information using the following parameters and visual indicators:

Status Type Icon Usage Scenario
progress 🔄 Ongoing background work or active processing
success ✅ Final confirmation of task completion
error ❌ Task termination due to a failure or exception
warning ⚠️ Issues encountered that do not stop the task

All messages should be kept under 140 characters to ensure readability within the Openclaw Skills interface.

Task Status Advanced Features

  • Background monitoring with customizable intervals (defaulting to 5 seconds).
  • Direct Python library support for importing status functions into custom agent scripts.
  • Integration with Clawdbot cron for automated, scheduled status checks.
  • Support for detailed metadata attachments using the --details flag for power-user debugging.
