What is Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary?

Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary is an Openclaw Skills capability for monitoring and analyzing Alibaba Cloud block storage fleets. It queries disk IOPS, bandwidth, utilization percentages, and block-size metrics to identify saturation, compare disks and instances, evaluate availability zones, and locate performance bottlenecks.

The skill also retrieves CloudLens for EBS resource overview reports covering disk counts, capacity, categories, regions, billing types, and event summaries. It directs users to the appropriate CloudMonitor and EBS Lens dashboards for deeper investigation while enforcing strict product boundaries, parameter confirmation, credential safety, response validation, and retry discipline.

Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary Use Cases

  • Investigate whether a disk is approaching its IOPS or bandwidth ceiling.
  • Compare read and write performance across disks, ECS instances, disk categories, or availability zones.
  • Analyze peak or average IOPS and BPS utilization over a defined UTC time window.
  • Aggregate metrics across multiple disks using filters and operations such as AVG, MAX, SUM, COUNT, MIN, and NON.
  • Review fleet composition by disk category, region, and billing type.
  • Measure absolute and percentage distributions of disk count and capacity.
  • Review EBS event summaries and event counts by name or region.
  • Browse the latest or historical CloudLens for EBS resource overview reports.
  • Resolve a disk name to a disk ID before querying disk metrics.
  • Open CloudMonitor for real-time monitoring and alarms or EBS Lens for health analysis and optimization recommendations.
  • Redirect users to the ECS console when they request data not exposed by the 14 supported resource overview report cards, such as encryption coverage or AutoPL adoption.

How Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary Works

  1. Generate one random 32-character lowercase hexadecimal session ID for the session and attach it to every cloud API CLI call through the required AlibabaCloud-Agent-Skills user-agent.
  2. Check the Alibaba Cloud CLI version, enable automatic plugin installation, update existing plugins, and verify that a valid default credential profile exists without exposing access keys or secrets.
  3. Confirm that CloudLens for EBS is enabled in the target region when the request involves resource overview reports; newly enabled data may take approximately 10 minutes to appear.
  4. Present a parameter checklist containing every required and optional value, including defaults such as period, report type, application name, page size, and page number.
  5. Ask the user to confirm or correct ambiguous parameters before execution, unless the request explicitly allows unattended auto-proceed or runs in an automated environment.
  6. Resolve disk names with aliyun ecs describe-disks when necessary, using the returned disk ID only for subsequent EBS metric queries.
  7. Query all disk metric values exclusively through aliyun ebs describe-metric-data, using supported metrics, dimensions, aggregation operations, and grouping labels.
  8. Retrieve resource overview data exclusively through aliyun ebs get-report or aliyun ebs list-reports, enumerating actual report titles instead of assuming unsupported card names.
  9. Validate each response for a RequestId, expected data arrays, timestamps within the requested window, sensible value ranges, and reviewed warnings.
  10. Cross-check quantitative conclusions against the raw payload, observe retry limits, and trigger a hard stop after two consecutive command failures instead of silently retrying.
  11. Present findings with concise interpretations, dashboard links, limitations, and optional next steps for deeper metric or historical report analysis.

Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary Setup

1. Install and verify the Alibaba Cloud CLI

Aliyun CLI version 3.3.3 or later is required. Ask for confirmation before installing software, never stream remote scripts directly into a shell, and do not run privilege-elevating commands on the user's behalf.

aliyun version

If the CLI is missing or outdated, prefer a package manager:

brew install aliyun-cli

For other platforms, use the documented local installation guide at references/cli-installation-guide.md after downloading and reviewing any installer.

2. Update the CLI plugin configuration

aliyun configure set --auto-plugin-install true
aliyun plugin update

Use plugin mode for EBS commands: lowercase-hyphenated command names and flags. The business region flag is --biz-region-id, not --region-id.

3. Verify credentials safely

The skill uses Alibaba Cloud's default credential chain. Check credential status without printing AK/SK values:

aliyun configure list

If no valid AK, STS, or OAuth profile exists, stop and have the user configure credentials outside the skill session. Never request secrets in chat or pass literal credentials to aliyun configure set.

4. Enable CloudLens for EBS when needed

Open the ECS Console at https://ecs.console.aliyun.com/, then navigate to Data Insights (EBS Lens) > Resource Overview and select Enable Now if required. Wait approximately 10 minutes for initial report data. The selected region must be enabled for CloudLens for EBS.

5. Prepare permissions

The required read-only RAM actions are ebs:DescribeMetricData, ebs:GetReport, ebs:ListReports, and ecs:DescribeDisks. If a permission error occurs, consult references/ram-policies.md, use the ram-permission-diagnose skill, and pause until access is granted.

Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary Data Schema & Taxonomy

Metric response structure

Element Purpose
RequestId Identifies the API request for verification and troubleshooting
TotalCount Number of matching metric series
DataList[] Matched metric series returned by describe-metric-data
Labels Dimension values such as DiskId, EcsInstanceId, DeviceCategory, or availability zone
Datapoints JSON string mapping Unix-second timestamps to metric values
Warnings Signals incomplete data or query conditions requiring review

Supported metrics include disk_read_iops, disk_write_iops, disk_read_bps, disk_write_bps, disk_iops_percent, disk_bps_percent, disk_read_block_size, and disk_write_block_size.

Resource overview report structure

Each Datas[] element represents a report card identified by Title and contains a nested Data[] array. Each series includes a Labels JSON object and a DataPoints map keyed by Unix timestamps. The available cards cover overall disk usage, disk count and capacity by category, region, and pay type, both as absolute values and percentages, plus event summaries and event counts.

Field Meaning
Datas[].Title Actual report card identifier; enumerate with --cli-query "Datas[].Title"
Datas[].Data[] Series for each category, region, billing type, or event dimension
Labels Object naming the series dimension, such as category or region
DataPoints Daily-granularity timestamp-to-value map
HistoryReports[] Historical report metadata from list-reports
HistoryReports[].ReportId Identifier required to retrieve a historical report
ReportTime Report generation time
SubscribePeriod Report subscription period metadata
ReportName Human-readable report name

Series can be sparse and may end on different dates. Use each series' newest point for current per-label values, and group by timestamp before summing series. Do not invent values for unsupported data such as encryption coverage, ESSD AutoPL adoption, burst usage, replication pair counts, dedicated block storage clusters, or over-provisioned disks.

Alibaba Cloud EBS Usage Summary Advanced Features

  • Supports single-disk queries, multi-disk filtering, cross-disk aggregation, and grouping by DiskId, DeviceType, DeviceCategory, EcsInstanceId, or availability zone.
  • Uses IOPS and bandwidth utilization percentage metrics specifically for saturation and bottleneck analysis.
  • Selects AVG for typical load, MAX for peak pressure, SUM for total throughput, COUNT for coverage, and MIN for low-watermark analysis.
  • Enforces a session-wide observability user-agent on every cloud API invocation and supports --cli-dry-run for request inspection.
  • Handles historical CloudLens reports by listing report metadata and retrieving a verified ReportId rather than guessing identifiers.
  • Provides dashboard routing between CloudMonitor real-time metrics and alarms, EBS Lens resource overview, and EBS Lens disk analysis.
  • Applies mandatory parameter confirmation gates, explicit ambiguity clarification, and hard-stop behavior after consecutive failures.
  • Includes progressive timeout retry guidance, throttling handling, permission diagnosis, empty-data handling, and time-range validation.
  • Performs response-level checks for request IDs, timestamps, value ranges, warnings, and expected payload arrays.
  • Requires a business-level consistency audit against raw API data before publishing quantitative findings.
  • Provides parsing guidance through --cli-query and related reference documentation for report titles and nested payloads.
  • Makes no resource changes, so the workflow is read-only and requires no cleanup phase.
