What is Etherlink?

Etherlink is a high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 2 solution built on top of the Tezos blockchain. This Openclaw Skills package empowers AI coding agents to communicate directly with the Etherlink network, facilitating everything from simple balance checks to complex smart contract interactions. By leveraging this skill, developers can automate blockchain workflows, query on-chain data, and execute transactions within their AI-driven development environment using natural language commands. It provides seamless access to both the production Etherlink Mainnet and the Shadownet testnet environment.

Etherlink Use Cases

  • Checking XTZ balances for specific wallet addresses on the Etherlink network.
  • Sending transactions and transferring native XTZ tokens between accounts.
  • Calling read-only functions or executing state-changing methods on deployed smart contracts.
  • Monitoring the latest block information and fetching detailed transaction logs.
  • Prototyping and testing Web3 applications on the Etherlink Shadownet using automated AI flows.

How Etherlink Works

  1. The AI agent initializes the Etherlink MCP server using the provided configuration and environment variables.
  2. When a user provides a natural language prompt, the agent identifies the appropriate blockchain action (e.g., getBalance, sendTransaction).
  3. The Openclaw Skills integration translates these requests into JSON-RPC calls sent to the Etherlink RPC nodes.
  4. For write operations, the skill securely signs transactions using the configured EVM private key.
  5. The agent receives the network response, such as a transaction hash or contract data, and presents the result to the user.

Etherlink Setup

To integrate this into your environment, you must have Bun installed and access to an Etherlink RPC node. Configure your MCP settings as follows:

# Install dependencies if required
bun install

Add the server configuration to your Claude or MCP-compatible host:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "etherlink": {
      "command": "bun",
      "args": ["run", "/path/to/etherlink-mcp-server/src/index.ts"],
      "env": {
        "EVM_PRIVATE_KEY": "your-private-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}

Etherlink Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes blockchain interactions through standard EVM parameters while respecting Tezos-specific L2 constraints:

Parameter Value Description
Network etherlink / etherlink-shadownet Target blockchain environment
Chain ID 42793 / 127823 Unique identifier for the network
Native Currency XTZ The token used for gas fees (18 decimals)
Gas Model Legacy No EIP-1559 support; use standard gas pricing
RPC Limit 1000 req/min Rate limiting for public endpoints

Etherlink Advanced Features

  • Dual-network compatibility allowing seamless switching between Mainnet and Shadownet.
  • Advanced debugging support through debug_traceTransaction for deep transaction inspection.
  • Full support for standard EVM JSON-RPC methods including eth_call, eth_estimateGas, and eth_getLogs.
  • Specialized handling for the Tezos-based fee market, ensuring transactions avoid EIP-1559 errors.
  • Integration path for Tezos L1 bridge operations for cross-layer asset management.
